PASSION AND PRAGMATISM
by: cakes and coffee

The Philippine society nowadays can be easily defined with the principles directed by a high level of proclivity towards the theory and practice of socio-economic pragmatism. Such manifestation of this socio-economic pragmatism is evident among the newly graduate students: those who just graduated from high school and those who just graduated from college. Statistically speaking, the number of high school students who enter college taking up in-demand courses such as BS Nursing has been increasing in the past years. But ironically, most of these graduates do not end up getting work related to their respective course.
In this situation that our country is facing, what should be done to make the high school graduates realize the importance of taking up courses that define their passion? What course of action should the government take to stop the trend of making incongruent pairing of graduates and their job?
First, the socio-economic state of the Philippines and the job opportunities must be considered: the ratio between job availability and the number of graduates holding in-demand degrees is not balanced. Actually, in the case of those who take BS Nursing, they are not expecting to work in the Philippines; in the first place, they plan to work abroad. Hence, it can be deduced from this fact that those who take in-demand courses are gambling with their future, whether they will be able to work abroad or not.
Second, the Philippine society, which is composed mainly of middle class, is dictated by the theory of pragmatism. As the technocrats and middle class try to empower themselves more, they are easily influenced by the trend of taking up possible opportunities that can give them more money in return. And with this belief comes the faulty realization of the importance of taking up courses where they can “earn more” rather than taking up courses related to their passion.
There are several ways in creating balance with job opportunities and graduates. First, in the coming years, there should be proper guidance given to students who will be taking up college degree by holding public seminars for students which will help them realize the problems and related hindrances regarding the ratio between specific job opportunities and oversaturated undergraduate courses. Second, college graduate should be advised to take up master’s degree to give them more specific field of specialization; thus, opening more opportunities.
Hence, it should be apparent that the society’s canvas for socio-economic and academic principles must be repainted. The theory of pragmatism can be helpful but if utilized in extreme levels, it can create a robotic society bending for consumerism and extreme commercialism, producing retro-active and robotic people working for money.
